Re: Building 3 World Trade Center benefits to Minority-owned and Women-owned Businesses
Dear Mr. Foye,
We are writing in support of immediately building 3 World Trade Center at the World Trade Center site. The benefits will be felt in communities throughout the City and the State and will especially make a difference to Minority-owned and Women-owned businesses (M/WBEs).
Like the Port Authority, Silverstein Properties is an ally and a supporter for the Minority and Women Owned Business community. Silverstein established a voluntary 15% goal for its buildings at the WTC, tracking Port Authority standards. In the end, Silverstein was able to achieve 40% M/WBE participation at 4 WTC. The procurement so far of the 3 WTC project has already hit 40% M/WBE participation which will total over $400 million to M/WBE firms.
There is a huge amount at stake for Minority-owned and Women-owned businesses. As you are aware, construction projects in New York City are attracting an unprecedented array of competitors, creating yet another hurdle for small, disadvantaged, minority, women and – most importantly – local New York-based firms. The situation means major challenges for companies like ours.
As you know, the 3 World Trade Center project is ready to go and could employ 10,000 construction workers and keep many companies in business and hiring. In addition, the project could bring tens of thousands of permanent jobs to the lower Manhattan area. Once the tower is built, the permanent jobs and presence of new businesses will provide a huge economic impact to the revitalization of Lower Manhattan, which is a vital part of our region’s economic base.
In light of these realities, we urge the Port Authority to immediately finalize the 3 WTC financing agreement with Silverstein Properties. This would be a historic achievement. This agreement would allow Silverstein to continue to rebuild what terrorists destroyed on 9/11. It would also bring us much closer to finishing the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan – a vision that has been talked about for 12 years, but hasn’t yet been achieved.
M/WBE businesses are counting on the Port Authority and Silverstein Properties to get the rebuilding back on track and us back to work. We urge you to support the building of 3 World Trade Center.
Very truly yours,
